SHINE A SPOTLIGHT ON DOCTORS’ MENTAL HEALTH

EXPANDED #CRAZYSOCKS4DOCS PROGRAM RELEASED FOR JUNE

As SASMOA Members know, just like any person doctors can experience the full range of mental health issues - anxiety, depression, burnout, fear, anger and more.

The high-pressure nature of the job and some of the circumstances doctors are exposed to – not to mention working hours and conditions – can leave doctors vulnerable. Concerningly, doctors have a high suicide rate compared to most other professions.

#CrazySocks4Docsaims to raise awareness of mental health issues experienced by doctors and make it OK to talk about them. It is also an opportunity to raise some funds this year for doctor-specific mental health research projects, in conjunction with the Breakthrough Mental Health Research Foundation.

In previous years #CrazySocks4Docshas focused on one day in June, with a successful breakfast being held in Adelaide last year.

Because of COVID-19, this year #CrazySocks4Docswill be a little different.

While there will still be a key #CrazySocks4Docsday (Friday June 5) when we will be encouraging doctors and others to wear their crazy socks and upload photos to social media, in the absence of holding a central breakfast to raise funds for research there will be a month-long online awareness program, with a series of short online videos with doctors talking about mental health published throughout June, culminating in an online webinar on the last Friday in June.

SASMOA will also be providing coffee and donuts for many of our Members on site on #CrazySocks4Docs day (Friday June 5) and prizes for the best #CrazySocks4Docs photos published to social media.

In the longer-term, SASMOA is also committing to facilitating the upgrade of the TMO Lounges at our key hospital locations. Decent facilities in which to have a break, grab a snack, chat with colleagues or just relax for a while are proven to help mental health. This project is being planned in conjunction with SASMOA’s TMO Committee and the TMO reps on the SASMOA Council.

Additionally, fatigue and working hours and conditions will be a key focus of our next Enterprise Bargaining negotiations with the State Government.
